Characters. Shylock. The J ewish money lending antagonist. Throughout the play, Shylock is caught in Jewish stereotype. Other characters never call him by his name; instead he is referred to as “the Jew”. This robs Shylock of his individuality and identity.

  2. The Jewish money lending antagonist. • Throughout the play, Shylock is caught in Jewish stereotype. Other characters never call him by his name; instead he is referred to as “the Jew”. This robs Shylock of his individuality and identity. • Shylock is obstinate in his vengeance. During the courtroom scene in Act IV, he refuses the offer of thrice over the original debt. Instead he insists on collecting what was agreed to.

  3. Is it… ? • He can exact revenge for Jessica’s betrayal. • Payback for Antonio’s bigotry. • To uphold Venetian law. • To corner the money lending market. • He wants to frighten Antonio into asking for forgiveness. • Why should he show mercy to a bigot like Antonio. • Get the court to force him to give money to Jessica he could lose everything if he dies. ? OR…

  4. How do (or can) we read Shylock? • Is forgiving daughter. This shows mercy. • Finds Launcelot Gobo work even though he calls Shylock ‘devil’. • Is the right thing to do look after Jessica and Launcelot.

  5. Keeping with the three casket motif… • Shylock plays up what is expected of him. • Is the poor victim. Driven mad by the betrayal of Jessica; his villainy is understandable. • Tricks them all and by doing so puts them to shame. Acts the way he does to get Jessica and Launcelot taken care of

  6. SO… • Shylock may be the only person who shows any mercy wants to be asked for forgiveness.
