  5. What is Feudalism? • System of governing and landowning • Based on mutual obligations • In exchange for military protection and services a lord, or landowner granted land called a fief. • The person receiving the land was called a vassal. • It deals with the control of land

  7. So what’s the difference between a Lord and Vassal? • Lord owned the Land (Fief) • Vassal was loaned the fief from the Lord • So, what does the Lord get from the vassal? • The vassal provides military service • Main reason: Military Protection

  8. So, what does the vassal get from the Lord? • A noble can be a vassal to many different Lords • Main Reason: The land and the money that came from it. • How big were the fiefs? • 1000 to 2000 acres

Were there different social classes? • Sure Were! • Social class was inherited • 3 different social classes • Those who fought (nobles & knights) • Those who prayed (people of the church) • Those who worked (peasants) • Peasants were called serfs • How was it possible that a serf was not a slave? • They could not be bought and sold by their Lords
