  2. What is It? • Derived unit which shows the mass per unit of volume • More dense materials are “heavier” than less dense materials • Density compares mass without variable of size

  3. Units of Density • For liquid or gas - g/ml • For solid – g/cm3

  4. Every Material Has A Unique Density • Lead 11.35 g/cm3 • Granite 2.70 g/cm3 • Water 1.00 g/ml • Ice .91 g/cm3 • Cork .24 g/cm3

  5. Sink or Float • Substances less dense than water float • More dense than water they sink

  6. Example 1 • What is the density of alum with a volume of 4.00 cm3 and a mass of 10.8 g?

  7. Example 2 • A piece of quartz has a volume of 30. cm3. The density is 2.65 g/ cm3, what is the mass?
