  1. 13th January Density LO – To be able to prepare an investigation like Archimedes did to find the density of different materials. UNSCRAMBLE - apirttle chreoy Particle Theory

  2. Who is Archimedes He lived between 287 and 212 bc Archimedes was a Greek mathematician, philosopher and inventor who wrote important works on geometry, arithmetic and mechanics.

He then returned to Syracuse, where he spent most of the rest of his life, devoting his time to research and experimentation in many fields.

  4. So what did he do?? • He is most famous for discovering the law of hydrostatics, sometimes known as 'Archimedes' principle', stating that a body immersed in fluid loses weight equal to the weight of the amount of fluid it displaces. Archimedes is supposed to have made this discovery when stepping into his bath, causing him to exclaim 'Eureka!'

  5. What about the science http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQsmq3Hu9HA

  6. HSW You have been given a measuring cylinder, a container with a spout, a balance and some different materials of which we do not know the density. We are going to weigh the material to find the mass and submerge the material in liquid to find its volume then calculate density. Density = mass volume • Write an aim for the investigation. • The aim for this investigation is to find out how different __________ are/have/affect___________ 2. Draw a table to collect your results

  7. During the Roman conquest of Sicily in 214 BC Archimedes worked for the state, and several of his mechanical devices were employed in the defence of Syracuse. Among the war machines attributed to him are the catapult and - perhaps legendary - a mirror system for focusing the sun's rays on the invaders' boats and igniting them. After Syracuse was captured, Archimedes was killed by a Roman soldier. It is said that he was so absorbed in his calculations he told his killer not to disturb him.

  9. Draw a Short cartoon strip no more than 4 squares to show Archimedes discovery of how to work out density density = mass / volume
