  1. SedimentaryRocks Inside Earth Chapter 5.3 Pages 154-158

  2. Weathering • Weathering: break down rocks on the surface into sediments • Sediments : pieces of material that come from rocks or living things.

  3. Weathering • Freezing & thawing • Growth of plants • Animal actions • Abrasion - sediments wear down exposed rock • Water (solution) • Oxygen (rust) • Carbon Dioxide • Acid Rain - pollutants in the air make water vapor acidic.

  4. Erosion • Running water or wind carries away loose sediments.

  5. Which is a form of Chemical weathering?

  6. Deposition • When sediments are “dropped off” by the water or wind carrying it.

  7. Compaction • Pressing rocks together due to gravity and the weight of overlying layers. • Layers build up over time • As layers form on top, press down and compact layers below • Creates visible layers

  8. Cementation • When dissolved minerals crystallize and glue sediment together. • Occurs during compaction • Dissolved minerals fill in the spaces between sediments.

  9. When sediment iscarried awayby wind or water.

  10. When layers of sediment are pressed together by gravity.

  11. Sedimentary rocks are formed by…

  12. Clastic Rocks • Sedimentary rock from rock fragments that are squeezed together.

  13. Clastic Rocks

  14. Clastic Rocks

  15. Clastic Rocks

  16. Which process forms Sedimentary rock after it is deposited?

  17. Organic Rocks • The remains of plants and animals deposited in thick layers.

  18. Chemical Rocks • Forms when dissolved minerals crystallize.

  19. Which of these is an Organicrock?

  20. Which of these is a Chemicalrock?

  21. Uses of Sed. Rocks • Sandstone and Limestone are commonly used as building material • Easily cut into slabs • Limestone is used in cement.

  22. Which of these does NOT describe how Sedimentary rocks are classified?
