  1. Slow Pitch Softball Equipment: Glove Bat 12” Ball ( 11” ball also used) 4 bases Origin: Slow Pitch softball was created by George Hancock in 1887 in Chicago, IL. • Game Etiquette: • The game is played in innings the visiting team base first this is called the top of the inning. • The home team bats second which is known as the bottom of the inning • There are 7 innings for a softball game, the team with the most runs after 7 innings wins.

  2. INFIELD • 1 = Pitcher • 2 = Catcher • 3 = First Baseman • 4 = Second Baseman • 5 = Third Baseman • 6 = Short Stop

  3. OUTFIELD • 7 = Left Fielder • 8 = Left Center Fielder • 9 = Right Center Fielder • 10 = Right Fielder

  4. Diagram of the field and positions

  5. Defense • The defending teams job is to get 3 outs so they can bat or become the offensive team. • How to get outs: 1. Pitcher can strike a batter out 2. Any fielder catches a ball that is hit in the air before it touches the ground. 3. Force a runner out that has hit the ball or was on base. 4. Tag a runner with the ball who is not on a base.

  6. OFFENSE • The offensive player will stand in the batting area and attempt to hit a ball that is pitched underhand to them. • Once a ball is struck the batter runs to first base or takes as many bases as the hit allows them to safely advance to. • The ultimate goal of the offense is to make it around all of the bases and back to home plate. Once that occurs a point, known as a RUN is awarded the offensive team.

  7. BATTING( Offense) A batter stands in the “Batters Box” on either side of home plate • Strike=a ball that is pitched over the plate between the shoulders and knees. A strike can also be a ball that a batter swings at and misses. A batter gets 3 strikes before they are out • Ball =any ball pitched outside of the strike zone. A batter gets 4 balls before the are “walked” • Foul Ball - any ball that is hit outside the lines of the field.

  8. Otherimportant Rules • A foul ball counts as a strike • A foul ball that is hit in the air can be caught before hitting the ground for an out. • No stealing bases • No leading off bases • No Bunting • There is always a force out at first base. • Tag up on fly balls to advance bases • You must tag a runner with the ball if they are not forced to go to the next base • The official in charge of a softball game is known as the “UMPIRE”
