  2. Aim: What are the four phases of the Menstrual Cycle? I. Phases of the Menstrual Cycle A. Follicle Stage – a single egg matures within the follicle under the influence of the hormone Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). Continues until ovulation (about 14 days).

  3. B. Ovulation – a single, mature egg is released from the follicle and ovary and goes into the oviduct. Occurs on the 14th day of the cycle.

  4. C. Corpus Luteum Stage 1. Luteinizing hormone (LH) is released after ovulation. 2. LH causes the follicle that just released the egg becomes a corpus luteum. 3. Corpus Luteum releases progesterone which causes the uterus lining to prepare itself for a fertilized egg. 4. CL stage lasts about 8-10 days.

  5. D. Menstruation – if egg is not fertilized, the uterine lining is broken down and the blood and tissue is released from the body via the vagina. This may occur for about 3-4 days.
