What is Water Pollution? • Contamination of water bodies(lakes, rivers, oceans, groundwater, etc.) • when pollutants are discharged into water bodies without proper treatment • Major Global concern • Leading world wide cause of death and diseases (est. 14,000 die everyday) • MEASUREMENTS • Chemical indicators of water quality: take sample of the water and measure concentration of chemicals. High concentration=polluted water • Biological Indicators of water: examine invertebrates living in the water. Many=unpolluted water. Little or no life=polluted water.

  4. Causes and Effects • Domestic • Sewage and Wastewater • Major problem • Developing countries – people lack basic sanitation • Leads to water related illnesses • Sometimes pumped untreated into the sea • Completely natural substance that should be broken down harmlessly in the environment

Industrial • use freshwater to carry away waste from the plant and into water bodies • Waste produced by industries can get into the water supply and contaminate water bodies • Radioactive and toxic materials from industries • Acid rain falls into lakes, streams and ponds, which lowers the overall pH of the waterway, and kills vital plant life thereby affecting the whole food chain.

Agricultural • Farms use large amounts of toxic pollutants such as herbicides and pesticides • Also use large amounts of chemical fertilizers that are washed into the waterways and damage the water supply and the life within it • Livestock grazing near water sources results in organic waste being produced and getting washed into the waterways, leading to eutrophication.

Prevention • Prevention • Education- Make people aware of the effects of water pollution and the problems associated with it • Implementation of Laws- Environmental laws can make it tougher for people to pollute, but to be really effective they have to operate across national and international borders • Little things you can do by yourself: • Don’t throw paints, oils or other forms of litter down the drain. • Use environmentally friendly household products such as washing powder, household cleaning agents and toiletries. • Don’t overuse pesticides and fertilizers • Don’t throw litter into rivers, lakes or oceans

Treatment • CLEAN-FLO • System to bring the oxygenated water at the bottom of a river to the surface. • Continuous Laminar Flow Inversion and Oxygenation. • Disinfecting Sewage and Wastewater • Universally implemented in almost all major cities. • Done by process of dilution and chlorination. • Planting around river corridors • Used to conserve the condition of current, healthy rivers.

Rhine • Longest River in Europe • Starting in Switzerland, ending past the Netherlands • Post WW2 (around 1970s) • Known as "Europe's Sewer", and "The Dead River" • Pollution from waste dumping, especially from surrounding mines and factories. • Did not start cleaning until 1986 • Awareness became apparent after a fire in the Sandoz Chemical Plant (Switzerland) • Made the water surrounding the area undrinkable
