The early years of the Vietnam War (1955-1975) were marked by significant events leading to conflict. After WWII, Vietnam declared independence from French rule, only to be reoccupied by the French, leading to the Battle of Dien Bien Phu and eventual division at the Geneva Conference. Ngo Dinh Diem's controversial regime in South Vietnam faced rising discontent over religious tensions and failed policies, ultimately culminating in his assassination in 1963. U.S. military involvement escalated under JFK, particularly following the Gulf of Tonkin incident, setting the stage for a larger conflict.
