  1. The Dietary Supplements Market Andrew DeMoss Research Methods: II

  2. Growth in the Dietary Supplements Industry • The dietary supplements industry has grown by vast amounts over the past 20 years. • Today it is a $20 billion industry

  3. Why this Industry? • The dietary supplement industry is constantly evolving. The effects of the evolution can be seen in the growth of the market. • Pretty much unregulated since 1994 • Very little quantitative research has been performed to this date.

  4. From the Doghouse to the Forefront of Popular Culture • Formerly an underground industry • Now can be seen advertised on popular tv programs and in all sorts of magazines

  5. In the News • NFL star Shawne Merriman was suspended for 4 games by the NFL for violating the substance abuse policy. • Merriman claimed he was wrongfully accused. • Says he took a tainted supplement, not steroids.

  6. Research Question • What has caused the growth in this market?

  7. Literature Review • Articles offer qualitative research on factors that have caused industry growth. • Articles only look at one factor or one supplement • Not much research on industry as a whole. • Limited number of scholarly articles

  8. Approach • What variables effect industry growth? • First review articles • Second review data • Combine the qualitative and quantitative research results to form my conclusions

  9. Model • Sales = f(prices, advertising, gym memberships, selected sports participation, legislation, health risks)

  10. Data • Sales is the easiest way to view growth in the industry. • Industry data is not easily accesible. • Took a look at industry leaders’ sales figures. • Found this data from Mergent Online • Gym memberships and sports participation also found.

  11. SalesFor NBTY Inc.

  12. Physical Factors

  13. Further Research • Quantitative data will be received from the Natural Market Institute in Philadelphia, PA.

  14. Conclusions • I expect to see that there are a number of different variables that have caused the dietary supplements market to grow. • Price is the only variable that I expect to be inversely related with sales.
