  2. Mathematics Program Goals • Develop students who value math and see it as useful to solving problems and making sense of the world. • Engage all students in experiences that help them reach proficiency. • Ensure that all students master the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to be college and career ready. • Prepare students with the desire and skills necessary to have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) or other college-level math courses in high school.

  3. Upgrades are being made to the mathematics program in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) based on: • The findings and recommendations in the K-12 Mathematics Work Group Report (2010) • The alignment of the curriculum with the internationally driven Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

  4. Additional factors influencing changes to the mathematics program include the following: • The evolving definition of college/career readiness driven by the demands of the 21st century work force. • The University System of Maryland’s new expectation that students complete Algebra 2 and a “non-trivial” mathematics course in their senior year. • The anticipated Algebra 2 test mandated by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) scheduled to begin in the 2014-2015 school year.
