  1. What is a Star???? a body of gasses that gives off energy Very hot! 3,000-50,000 C Made of elements H, He, C, N, O Space: Stars and Galaxies

  2. Grouping Stars Constellations Groups of stars that have been named after a myth

  3. Asterisms Parts of constellations

  4. First learned of Stars by looking See them using visible light

  5. Stellar Magnitude (brightness) Brightest stars have the lowest numbers Dimmest stars have the highest numbers Apparent Magnitude: Brightness as seen from earth. Absolute Magnitude: brightness as seen from a standard distance (32 light years) Most stars: -5 to +15. Our Sun: +5

  6. Stellar Magnitude (brightness) Apparent Magnitude:Brightness as seen it from earth. How are apparent and absolute magnitudes different? Apparent relies on distance from earth and absolute is the true brightness. How does the absolute magnitude of the Sun compare to its apparent magnitude? Absolute is higher because it’s so close to earth.

  7. What is a circumpolar star? A star that is always visible in the night sky because it’s so close to Polaris. Ex. little dipper in Northern Hemisphere
