  3. The ability to find the right question is more than half the battle of finding the answer. Thomas J. Watson

  4. What questions do you want to talk about today?

  5. Job Related Success Factors What interviewers look for to determine who they hire: • Can you do the job? • How will you do the job? • What makes you want to do the job?

  6. Technical Knowledge and Skills (can you do the job) • Competencies that are required for the job, such as degrees, licenses or certifications. • Technical knowledge can come from work experience, education, credentials, or certifications.

  7. Performance Skills (how will you do the job) • Better known as behaviors, performance skills are those abilities above and beyond technical knowledge that are needed to do the job. Examples of performance skills include leadership, initiative, attention to detail, and persuasiveness.

  8. Motivations (will you do the job) • This includes job fit and company fit. • Motivations reveal whether a person will do the job, not just whether the person can do it.

  9. Complete your “homework” • Gather data about the job and the company • Review business plans, mission statements, company values and guiding principles • Review the job description/summary to determine qualifications, responsibilities, reporting relationships, etc. • What does the company want me to do? • What examples can I provide/share to show that I will “shine” in this position?

  10. Components of a Response • Responses should be in the form of SAR responses: • Situation • Action taken • Results • Use your “best” “most” or “greatest” examples (or “worst” if asked)

  11. If you were to give interviewing advice to a job candidate, which of the following statements would you suggest that he or she NOT use in an interview? (select top two only) n = 468 Note: Percentages do not total 100% as respondents were allowed multiple choices.

  12. Interview Success Tips • Know yourself!!! • Listen to the question • Always think about your response before answering – take your time and don’t be rushed • Be specific when possible • Tell the whole story, briefly (give complete responses)
