  3. Approx. 2000 B.C. • The Iberians arrive. (ibericos) • Gave Spain and Portugal the Iberian Peninsula.

  4. 1100 B.C. • The Phoenicians (los fenicios) arrive from what we know as present day Lebanon. • Founded the cities of Cadiz and Malaga.

  5. 1000 – 500 B.C. • The Celts (celtas) arrive in Spain. • They travelled from Northern Europe south to Spain. • Blue eyes and blond hair

  6. 800 – 700 B.C. • The Greeks arrive in Spain. (los griegos) • Olive vines (los aceitunas) • Grape vines (las uvas) • Still chief exports of Spain.

  7. The Cartheginians • Came from the area known today as Tunisia.

  8. Romans • Introduced Latin which evolved into: • Spanish • French • Italian • Portugese • Romanian

  9. Visigoths • Los Visigodos • Came from the area known as Germany.

  10. Arabs • Came from Northern Africa • Also known as The Moors (los moros) • Introduced the cultivation of rice and oranges. • Cordoba • Granada Almodovar Castle in Cordoba, Spain

  11. 1492…Columbus sailed the ocean blue • The Moors were defeated by the Catholic monarchs. • Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castille
