  2. CESA 7 Approach to the Math Curriculum • Organization of Standards into “Sense-Making” Categories • Meaningful chunking of learning into Inquiry Modules • Emphasis on the intent of the standards • Recognition of the importance of the standards for Mathematics Practices • Emphasis on cognitively complex mathematics tasks to achieve standards • Resource neutral companion for local work

  7. Inquiry Modules “Logical groupings of common core mathematics standards based on how they connect for instruction with elements that aid in organizing assessment and instruction from the beginning of the school year until the end. Inquiry modules are carefully sequenced vertically from grade to grade to ensure learning progressions.” -Companion Glossary

  8. Module Overview A description of: • the focus of the mathematics for the module. • the concepts, strategies and applications that reside in the module. • the depth of the mathematics in the module. • what students should know and be able to do.

  9. Module Overview

  10. Essential Questions Essential questions are open-ended questions that guide the teacher’s instruction toward enduring understandings.

  11. Essential Questions

  12. Critical Focus Areas Critical focus areas described in the Common Core Standards define all of the mathematics for each grade level (K-8) and conceptual category (9-12).

  13. Critical Focus Areas

  16. Sense Making Categories

  17. Sense Making Categories • Sense-Making Concepts • The standards that are grouped in this category are foundational standards important in the conceptual development of major mathematical ideas. Sense-Making Strategies The standards that are grouped in this category are mathematical strategies that should be used after investigation and development of concepts has occurred. Sense-Making Applications & Modeling The standards that are grouped in this category are usually mastered after the mathematical idea has been conceptually developed. Students need to recall, model, and apply their mathematical background knowledge in order to connect mathematical ideas. Application and modeling can be independent of sense-making concepts and strategies.
