ANZAC DAY

1. ANZAC DAY This day is a very special day in New Zealand. We would like to tell you a little bit about it.

2. ANZAC DAY • ANZAC Day is celebrated in Australia and New Zealand on the 25th April. • We celebrate ANZAC Day to remember the soldiers who fought and died in World War One and other wars since then. • On ANZAC Day lots of people wear red poppies.

3. Gallipoli - 25 April 1915 • The soldiers landed at ANZAC Cove but it all went wrong. • Lots of the ANZAC soldiers died as soon as they stepped out of the boats because they were unaware that the Turks were waiting for them on the hills ready to shoot.

4. The Trenches • Trenches were like tunnels dug in the ground. They had no roof. • They were used to protect the soldiers from gunfire during the day and at night. • When it rained the trenches flooded and it got all muddy. Sometimes the soldiers were up to their knees in mud. • The trenches were narrow and were crowded with soldiers. • They lived and died in these trenches.

5. ANZAC CELEBRATIONS • In every city and town in New Zealand and Australia there is a dawn parade to remember the soldiers who have fought and died at war. • There is a moment of silence. • They have gunfire without any bullets. • They play The Last Post - The Last Post is played by a lone bugler and it has two parts: the tune that woke the soldiers up and the tune they went to bed to. • The poem Ode to the Fallen is read. • In the week before ANZAC Day people can buy felt poppies that they wear. • All the shops are closed until one.
