  2. What is Anzac Day? • Anzac Day is a holiday celebrated each year on the 25th of April. • It is a day we remember & honour the men and women who served and died in wars around the world so that we could enjoy peace.

  3. Why do we have Anzac Day? • Anzac Day is a special day for New Zealanders and Australians, when we honour the sacrifice. Of those who died and the courage of those who served in any of those conflicts, and reflect on the sadness and horror of war.

  4. What do we do on Anzac Day? • On Anzac Day we wear poppies and pray. • We also sing songs like the National Anthem, there is also a parade called the march. • People play the Last post on the bugle, we also have a minutes silence. • Minutes silence – a moment spent in quiet thought about Anzac sacrifices.

  5. What are Poppies? • Poppies are a special kind of flower. • We wear poppies because they were found on Flanders Field during the war where the soldiers died. • The colour red from the poppies represents the blood of the soldiers.

The war at Gallipoli • With World War stalled on the Western Front by 1915. • The Allied Powers were debating going on the offensive in another region of conflict, rather than continuing with attacks in Belgium and France. • Early that year, Russia’s Grand Duke Nicolas appealed to Britain for aid in confronting a Turkish invasion in the Caucasus. • The Ottoman Empire had entered World War on the side of the Central Powers, Germany and Austria-Hungary, by November 1914.
