  1. Thursday 9th September 2010 L/O: - to understand the formation of fold mountains and ocean trenches - to investigate the possibilities for human use of these landforms - to comment upon the opportunities and problems for people living and working in the Alps. Landforms at plate margins – fold mountains and ocean trenches

  2. Starter 1 Constructive plate boundaries mid-ocean ridge A ocean B oceanic crust mantle Where would you find older rocks – at A or at B?

  3. Starter 2: Watch the following video clip it very briefly explains to you what we need to learn in today's lesson http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/geography/platetectonics/fold_mount_video.shtml

  4. Destructive plate boundary Collision boundaries occur when two plates of similar densities move together (i.e. a continental plate and a continental plate). This causes the material between them to buckle and rise up, forming fold mountains. The Alps are an example of a chain of fold mountains. They have been formed by the African plate colliding into the Eurasian plate.

  5. How are fold mountains formed? http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/geography/platetectonics/tec_plates_video.shtml

  6. L/O: to investigate the different landforms found along destructive plates boundaries. Task 1: Read pg. 8 & 9 UGG(new) a] TITLE: How are fold mountains formed? Answer like this: Fold mountains are formed by … b] Glue your handout in and colour to make clearer. c] Answer 1 a, b & c d] TITLE:How are Ocean trenches formed? Answer like this: Ocean trenches are formed by …

  7. Plenary 1 Task 1: A. Look at the map above (P.8): What is the relationship between the location of fold mountains and where earthquakes happen (see map p. 18)? Look at figure 2 on P. 6 and the map above before answering these questions B. Along which two plate margins would you find Mt. Everest? C. Along which two plate margins would you find Marianas trench? D. What is a subduction zone (glossary?) E. What types of tectonic activity occurs near to a subduction zone? 10 mins

  8. L/O - to comment upon the opportunities and problems for people living and working in the Alps. Task 2 Put the sub-title, ‘CASE STUDY: The Alps – a fold mountain range.’ Read pg. 10 & 11. 1. Explain how the Alps were formed 2. Find the Alps in an atlas. What European countries do the Alps cover? What is the highest peak? 3. Look back at pg. 9. What physical problems do the Alps pose for human activity? 4. Complete Act. 1a i) ii) b c. 5. Complete Act. 2 a b. 6. Why are fold mountain areas ideal for the generation of HEP? 7. Why are the Alps well populated in comparison to most other fold mountain ranges?

  9. EXTRA The BENEFITS and PROBLEMS of ski resort development in Livigno, Italy Video ‘Italy’ no. 112, prog. 3

  10. Task 2: a. TITLE: How are fold mountains formed? (P. 8) Answer like this: Fold mountains are formed by … b. Glue your handout in c. Answer 1 b & c on P. 9 (25 mins) Task 3: Complete the double sided w/s using P. 10 - 11 Fold mountains are actually formed by crust which have been uplifted and folded. This occurs along destructive plate boundaries where 2 plates move towards each other, between continental plates or between an oceanic and a continental plate. The crust and the rocks get bent and crumpled, and massive layers of Earth's crust gets uplifted as a result, forming spectacular fold mountains.

  11. Plenary 2: What are the main problems in living in mountainous (Alpine) Regions? 3marks • You need to make 3 valid statements. • State 3 problems that people face in mountainous regions

  12. What are the main problems in living in Alpine Regions Few people live in Alpine areas for a number of reasons:1. Poor communications due to the mountains2. Few industries are attracted so there are few jobs3. High altitude areas with cold wet climates4. Avalanches and landslides are dangerous and can cause problems5. Farming is difficult due to the steep slopes and short growing season

  13. L/O: To investigate the different landforms found along destructive plates boundaries. HOMEWORK: Complete both sides of W/S ‘1.3 Problems for people ……………..’ [Due 16th Sept.] Challenge task: Study student book p.6 -7. Then complete a copy of the table below, about plate boundaries.
