  1. 4 3 Relative FOSL1 mRNA level 2 1 0 0 0.5 1 1.5 Relative miR-138 level Supplementary Figure 3: The levels of miR-138 and FOSL1 mRNA in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Frozen tissue samples were obtained from 9 HNSCC patients from the Midwestern Division of the Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN). The demographics of the patients were as follows: 6 male, 3 female; mean age of 56.2 years; there were one T1 cases, four T2 cases and three T3 case, and one T4. This study was approved by Institutional Review Boards at University of Illinois at Chicago. Tissue samples were obtained after the tumor resection and snap frozen. Specimens containing more than 80% tumor cells on H&E pathological examination were selectively microdissected. The total RNA was isolated using miRNeasy Mini kit (Qiagen), and quantified by the RiboGreen RNA Quantitation Reagent (Molecular Probes). The levels of miR-138 and FOSL1 mRNA were determined by quantitative RT-PCR as described previously [13]. An apparent inverted correlation between miR-138 and FOSL1 levels was observed (r = -0.439). However, it is not statistically significant (p = 0.138).
