March 2013 LCCU Meeting • Judy Grindle will discuss and demonstrate: • How can you securely clean off files and programs from a PC before donating it, or just completely remove deleted files? • Answers to members’ other questions: • Which email clients allow read receipts and how do you request them? • Which email clients let you view/change HTML? • How can members share tips between meetings? • How does Share work on Facebook? • Is copying radio music legal? Is free music available on the internet?

March 2013 LCCU MeetingClean Files & Programs off PC • To securely delete Windows OS, all programs & files: • Acronis Drive Cleanser ($61) • Active @ KillDisk (Free, or Pro version $30-50) • Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) – free, no support • To securely delete specific files: • DP Wiper • Eraser • FreeRaser • To securely delete unused space on drive: • Eraser, Active @ KillDisk ,Ccleaner

March 2013 LCCU MeetingClean Files & Programs off PC • Acronis Drive Cleanser ($61) - Wipes whole partition, then use Windows CD to restore the operating system, Use it to create a bootable CD before wiping the partition you usually boot from. • Active @ KillDisk – Destroys all data on hard disks, USB drives and floppy disks, or wipes unused area. Free version fills with zeroes, Pro version ($30-50) supports 17 security standards. • Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) – free, creates boot disk that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers.

  4. March 2013 LCCU MeetingClean Files & Programs off PC • Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) - procedure • Download file & create boot disk. For Windows XP or Vista can use CDBurnerXP or imgBurn to create the boot disk. In Win7, right-click downloaded .iso file and select “Open with” & “Windows disc image burner”. • On PC to be nuked, Enter the BIOS and Change boot sequence by pressing Del, Esc, F1 or F2 (depending on the PC) at startup. Place the CD drive first in the boot drive list. • Boot PC with boot disk in drive and follow instructions/tutorial. • Use original Windows disks to replace the operating system.

March 2013 LCCU MeetingSecurely Delete Files from PC • DP Wiper - Overwrites files with up to 35 passes. • Eraser • Erase unused space or specific folders - does not work with Windows 7, Jim E. had trouble with it. • Set default file erasure method, default unused space erasure method, randomness data source • FreeRaser • Erase specific files, for Windows XP & Vista, 7, portable. • Recommended by Jim Erdahl & PC World, but reviews on download.com say erased files may be found by Piriform’s Recuva or Glary Undelete software, so check your results.

March 2013 LCCU MeetingSecurely Delete Files from PC • CCleaner by Piriform • Wipes entire drive only for non-system drives • Tools tab, Drive Wiper tab, Wipe: Entire Drive, or Free space only • Security: 1, 3, 7 or 35 passes; Drive: C:, D:, etc. • Recuva by Piriform – • Recovers files deleted normally. • Securely deletes specific files so they cannot be recovered.

March 2013 LCCU MeetingEmail & Read Receipts • Clients - Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail • To request read receipts for all email, in the menu click Tools, Options, Receipts tab, check “Request a read receipt for all sent messages.” • To request read receipt for a single email, click Tools, and “Request read receipt” in the message’s menu.

Then click the Source tab below the message to see/edit HTML. • Clients – Windows Live Mail & Windows Mail • To view or edit HTML, with the message open, click CTRL F2.

Mail Beta, plus Apple products. • Improvement recommended for Google Gmail, Lotus Notes 8, Microsoft Outlook 2007, Windows Live Hotmail. • See above for how each handles an “acid test” page.
