August 2017 LCCU MeetingCleanup PC files • Auto cleanup of recycle bin & temporary files: • Open Settings, click System, Storage. • Toggle “Storage Sense” to On. Click “Change how we free up space” • Toggle on – “Delete temporary files that my apps aren’t using”. • Toggle On – “Delete files that have been in the recycle bin for over 30 days”.
September 2017 LCCU MeetingCleanup PC files • Windows Disk Cleanup • Search for “Disk Cleanup”, left-click, or right-click & select “Run as administrator” for a more complete list: select drive and “OK”. • Uncheck anything you want to keep. • What not to delete: • Windows ESD Installation Files, if present, used to “Reset Your PC”. • Files related to uninstalling an update or a device driver or troubleshooting a system problem, if you’re planning that.

August 2017 LCCU MeetingCleanup PC files • Cleanup Downloads Folder - Automatically in Windows 10 after Fall Creators Update: • First save any files that you want to keep to Documents folder, OneDrive, thumb drive, etc. • Open Settings, click System, Storage. • Toggle “Storage Sense” to On. Click “Change how we free up space” • Toggle On – “Delete files in my Downloads folder that haven’t changed in over 30 days”. If not present, you don’t have Windows Build 16199 yet. Try it this fall.
August 2017 LCCU MeetingCleanup PC files • Cleanup Downloads Folder • For Windows 10, 8, 7 – Search for “Downloads”, press Ctl A to select all, press Delete to send to recycle bin. • For Edge, Internet Explorer, Firefox & Opera browsers, press “CTL j”, click “Clear All” or “Clear Entries” to delete all, or delete individual entries. • For Chrome browser, click “CTL J”, click “More Actions” at upper right, and select “Clear All” or delete individual entries.
September 2017 LCCU Meeting.prn file format • Definition: • It is the suggested file extension when you “print to file”. • Contents depend on printer driver selected, varies widely, may be Postscript, PCL, … • Format used with DOS command to direct to LPT1 or PRN, as in “copy /B filename.prn B prn”. Only works if you have same type of printer as created it. • No longer supported by Microsoft. Some say Word 2003 will open it but not Word 2010.
September 2017 LCCU Meeting.prn file format • Supposedly it takes 2 steps (don’t work for me): • Convert .prn to .pdf • Using Irfanview if postscript printer driver – get Ghostscript decoding error. • Using winPCLtoPDF if PCL printer driver – but Norton says it’s unsafe, & it wouldn’t run • Print .pdf file: • Adobe Acrobat Reader or other free pdf reader • Works with (didn’t work either): • Corel Draw (it says on my PC, but I get grey screen)

September 2017 LCCU MeetingList file extensions & programs • Extensions present on your PC • Settings, Apps, Default Apps, “Choose default apps by file type”, … generates a list • .prn default app on my PC is Corel Draw X6 • In general: • Alphabetic file extension list • Note – any program may have its own proprietary file extensions, so any list may be incomplete. The above list show that an extension may have different uses & formats associated with it.

September 2017 LCCU MeetingWindows 10 Creators Update • Settings • Night Light setting, makes screen’s color temperature warmer at night, makes it easier to get to sleep – Settings, System, Display. • Storage Sense can automatically clear temp files and recycle bin – Settings, System, Storage. • Can set active hours window up to 18 hours and Windows Update will not run during that time; also • New Troubleshooting menu – Settings, Update & Security.

September 2017 LCCU MeetingWindows 10 Storage Spaces • Definition: • Composed of at least 2 extra drives besides drive where Windows is installed. Must be blank to start. • Group drives together to create a storage pool. • Use capacity from the storage pool to create virtual disks called storage spaces. • Choose a layout, e.g. 2-way mirror, to protect data, and maximum size storage space can reach. If storage space grows to exceed size of pool, system will ask that more drives be added to the pool.

Avira still supports XP (as of 2016). • Disconnect from internet when you don’t need it; use Comodo Free Firewall when you do. • Delete outdated software such as MS Office 2003 and earlier.

December 2016 LCCU MeetingWindows 10 File History • By default, it will back up Documents, Pictures, Desktop, Downloads, OneDrive, Music and Video folders, but you can add add or exclude folders. • Back up to an external drive or network drive. • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Backup, and under “Backup using file history”, select “Add a drive”, and select your drive. This will turn on “Automatically back up my files”. • Select “More options” to configure.
