November 2017 LCCU MeetingKRACK Vulnerability • What is it? • Key Reinstallation Attack – a security flaw in WPA2 wifi internet protocol. • Attacker must be within wi-fi range and impersonate a network that your device trusts. • Attacker can read data from device or access point, including passwords.
November 2017 LCCU MeetingKRACK Vulnerability • How to be safe? • Use a wired connection. • Use a phone’s data plan. • Use a VPN, but it must be one you trust. • Use https websites – and use HTTPS Everywhere browser extension. • Apply device software updates – Windows patch was out before vulnerability was announced; attack is harder to do but still possible.
November 2017 LCCU MeetingKRACK Vulnerability • How to be safe? • Make sure your wireless network uses WPA2 with AES encryption, which avoids altered websites. • Turn off file sharing across a network unless it uses a password, as does Workgroups.

November 2017 LCCU MeetingSystem Restore • What is restored: • System state before restore point • System files, installed programs (maybe), registry, system settings, hardware drivers, uninstalls. • What is not restored: • Your documents, pictures, other personal files; these are left unchanged. • In Windows 10, it may be off by default.
November 2017 LCCU MeetingSystem Restore • To see existing restore points: • Click Start, Settings, System, About, System Info under “Related Settings” on right. • Click System Protection, System Restore button, Next, to see newest restore point. • Click “Show more restore points” to see if there are others. • Select restore point, click “Show affected programs”. • To start the system restore, click “Next”.
November 2017 LCCU MeetingSystem Restore • To turn on or increase/decrease restore points: • Click Start, Settings, System, About, System Info under “Related Settings” on right • Click System Protection, Configure. • To start setting restore points, click “Turn on system protection”. • To increase/ decrease restore points, move “Max usage” slider under “Disk usage”. • You can also “delete all restore points”, useful if you’re cleaning out a virus.

November 2017 LCCU MeetingSystem Restore • To use restore points when system won’t start normally, boot up in Safe Mode: • If PC fails to boot up twice, it should display “Recovery” screen. Select “See advanced recovery options” and select Safe Mode.

November 2017 LCCU MeetingOrganize Files & Folders • HowToGeek system for any operating system : • If PC has a second hard drive, put your files there. • Have a single root folder under C: or D:, such as “Files”. • Next level: users of computer or who created the files, plus a folder for shared files and a Settings folder. • Move the Windows default folders that you use into your folder hierarchy. • Create subfolders for subject or timeliness, any depth. • Use meaningful, brief names.
November 2017 LCCU MeetingOrganize Files & Folders • The Windows 10 organization system: • The root folder is C:\Users. • Next level: user or account name. • Under each user account are folders for Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Music, Pictures, Saved Games & Videos, settings are in AppData. • User “Public” folders, are shared to all users, found under “Libraries”. • Create subfolders under the above for subject or timeliness, to any depth.

November 2017 LCCU MeetingOrganize Files & Folders • Organize files based on purpose, not file type. • Use shortcuts to avoid duplicating files. • Right-click source and select Copy. • Right-click destination and select Paste Shortcut. • Rename shortcut to make name short. • Use the exact same folder structure on all your computers, so that moved shortcuts work. • Have an Inbox folder. • Where files are put until categorized.
November 2017 LCCU MeetingSync Files & Folders • Sync folders between computers, methods: • Contents of one folder (and its subfolders) are available anywhere, uses the cloud – i.e. Dropbox. • Contents of many folders are available anywhere, using cloud – i.e. Microsoft Live Mesh or OneDrive. • Files/folders on one computer are synced with one other computer on the same network, no cloud – Microsoft SyncToy (but not for Windows 10) or SyncBack from 2BrightSparks or several others.

November 2017 LCCU MeetingSync Files & Folders • Sync options in SyncToy for folder pairs : • Synchronize - if you add, delete or rename a file in either folder, changes are made in the other folder, too. • Echo – additions, renames or deletions made in the first folder are reflected in the second, but not the others way around – one-way. • Contribute – additions and changes, but not deletions, in the first folder are reflected in the second, changes in the second folder are not reflected in the first. • Syncs to folders on external or network drives.

October 2017 LCCU MeetingHomegroups • A homegroup is a group of PCs on a home network that can share files and PC-connected printers and stream media to devices like TVs & game consoles. • It is protected with a password. • You can have only one homegroup per network. One PC creates the homegroup; the others join it. • You can select which libraries and devices to share. Default access is view only, but you can allow view and edit.

October 2017 LCCU MeetingHomegroups • To create a homegroup in Windows 10 • Right click Start, select “Network Connections” and “HomeGroup”, or search for Homegroup. • If no homegroup exists on the network, you have a choice to create one and set the password. • If a homegroup exists, you get a “Join now” button and are asked to enter the password. • You will be able to select which libraries and PC connected devices to share.

December 2016 LCCU MeetingWindows 10 File History • By default, it will back up Documents, Pictures, Desktop, Downloads, OneDrive, Music and Video folders, but you can add add or exclude folders. • Back up to an external drive or network drive. • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Backup, and under “Backup using file history”, select “Add a drive”, and select your drive. This will turn on “Automatically back up my files”. • Select “More options” to configure.

Files saved on another computer can be restored as well. • You can restore previous versions. For a given folder, you can restore deleted files.

April 2017 LCCU MeetingWindows 10 Recovery Options • Bad recently installed app, driver or update • Do system restore – go to Control Panel, Recovery. • Not working well, don’t know why • Reset PC, select “keep my files” (lose desktop apps). • Clear off data and donate or recycle PC • Reset PC, select ‘remove everything”. • Your PC won’t start • Use recovery drive or installation media and system image backup to restore or recover the PC.
