Afton Catalyst Test Update to ESCIT Panel February 28, 2006
Afton Catalyst Test, Version I • Version I testing ended in 12/05. • Summary of Test • Ford 4.6L V8 engine built to Seq. VG standard • 10-day test using production Ford 2004 MY 900 cpi catalyst • 24-hour oil change interval • Operating conditions selected to accelerate oil-related effects on the catalyst while minimizing thermal effects • Full emission analysis capability, pre and post catalyst • Summary of Results • Test was sensitive to phosphorus concentration • Developed ability to measure phosphorus throughput by bulk and volatile means • Established repeatability data for emission measurements
Afton Catalyst Test, Version II • Many changes were made to affect ratio of volatile phosphorus throughput to bulk phosphorus throughput • New engine installed • Production Ford 4.6L V8 with normal ring gaps • Elimination of Seq VG chilled rocker covers and PCV system • Operating conditions adjusted to increase volatility-related effects • Increased oil and coolant temperatures to mimic severe service • Required small increase in speed and load • Maintained sub-critical catalyst inlet temp. • Under 600C • Increased oil volume by 50% • Maintained test duration (10-days) and oil change interval (24-hours)
Testing Status • Have determined impact of changes on phosphorus throughput • Ratio of volatile to bulk phosphorus throughput changed from 0.7 to 1.8. • Verifying impact of changes with high and low PEI oils • Assessing correlation to field with SAE paper oils 32, 33 and 35 • Evaluating constituents of blowby condensate for possible comparison to PEI
Timeline • Goal to have test-development oils evaluated by April, 2006
