  2. What is Guam? • An unincorporated trust territory of the United States • The biggest island in the Marianas chain of Islands first discovered by Spanish expedition with Ferdinand Magellan

  3. What Is Guam? • Just like the US, Guam is a melting pot for many cultures. • Its proximity to Asia cemented its status as: “Where America’s Day Begins”

  4. A Snapshot of Guam’s Population • According to the latest Guam Census (2012), the population increased from 154,805 to 159,358 • The number is expected to rise to 180,000 with the relocation of U.S Armed Forces from Okinawa, Japan during the pending military buildup in the Pacific region • Guam’s population is spread out through its 19 official municipalities.

Some Factors Affecting Population Change • The U.S. has an agreement with the Federated States of Micronesia known as the Compact of Free Association • This agreement between the two countries allows the U.S. to have a presence (in terms of military and cash subsidies) • FSM residents are free to move to anywhere in the U.S. • Job opportunities are scarce in these islands

In-migration happens within Guam itself • Many residents tend to move from the village they grew up in to another • Work • School • Family • Cultural shift • In context with cultural change, many have abandoned the farms that was once a center of family activities. • These farms now are seen in a more modern context.
