  3. Mexico Get a Mexico Country Profile Handout and read it over with your partner. What does this handout say are the biggest challenges facing Mexico today? What does it say about Journalists in Mexico?

Then turn in a Packet that includes: India DBQ South Africa Chart and BSQ answer Take Action Assignment You will need a piece of Binder Paper for your quiz.

  5. Please take out a piece of paper and title it: Pg. 70A Is Journalism Worth Dying For? Take notes on this paper This week we are going to be looking at the issue of a FREE PRESS in a struggling democracy. Our Case Study is going to be in Tijuana, Mexico. We will look at the role Journalists play in a democracy and answer this focus question: Is Journalism worth dying for?

Please consider with your partner: • Please read the two articles by Richard Marosi on violence and corruption in Tijuana, Mexico • Then answer on your paper: • Why do you think drug cartels are able to murder so many people in Tijuana without getting caught or being stopped? • What do you think would happen if a similar killing spree happened in nearby San Diego?

  12. Announcements • Last day to turn in work from assignment 42 on is Dec. 16th. I will accept Cornell Notes, Writing Assignments, The India/Africa and China re-tests and Critical Thinking Assignment. • China In Class Essay Writing Retest is 7th Period on Thursday. Speak to me to get your name on the list to do this retest. • Study Guide for the CWI Final is On Line. Download your own copy or if you need me to print one for you, let me know. The final is Multiple Choice and covers the whole year.

Please consider with your partner: • Take a moment to review the handout in your packet labeled: Principles of Journalism • Then answer these questions with your partner: • Why was it important for Zeta to be independent of government influence? • What value does an independent and free press bring to a democracy? • How can a free press protect other human rights? • What is the role of government in protecting freedom of the press? • Do we have a free press in America? Explain.

Please consider with your partner: • Now look at the handout with the Graphs labeled: • “25 Journalists Murdered In Mexico Since 1992” • In Mexico, Journalists who speak out against the Cartels and corrupt government and law enforcement professionals risk their lives. • Of the 25 journalists who have died since 1992, only 3 cases have been tried, and only 3 murderers brought to justice. • Reporters don’t just risk their own lives, they risk the lives of their families as well.

  17. Find the handout titled Editorial Board Role Play Read the background information under Context of Zeta’s Reporting Then read Today’s Issue to Discuss Finally, draw the T chart at the bottom of the page on your paper.

  18. Decide: Should the paper publish the story? If so, should Ortiz have a byline? Fill out the T-Chart with your partner before you try to answer this question. Make sure you answer WHY.

  20. Focus Question:Is Journalism worth dying for? Add you opinion to your paper. Make sure you explain WHY you think that way. Finish this for Homework if you need more time.
