  1. Do Now: Write two sentences that are observations and two sentences that are inferences.

  2. Aim: Why are some objects more dense than others? • Topic: Prologue • Main Idea: Density

  3. 1) Define density: • It is the measure of how tightly packed the molecules in a substance are. Moredense

  4. 2) What is the difference between mass and volume? Mass is the amount of molecules in a substance but the volume is how much space they take up.

  5. 3) What is the formula for calculating density? Density= Mass/Volume

  6. 4) What would happen to the density of an object if you cut it in half? Why? Nothing!!! If you cut an object you are still keeping the spacing between the molecules the same.

  7. 5) How do you change the density of an object? • (a) Change the temperature • (b) Change the pressure on the object

  8. 6) Why is water such a strange substance? • It is the most dense in the liquid phase at 4 degrees Celsius.

  9. sink • Objects that are more dense will __________ in water, but objects that are less dense will ___________. float

  10. Summary: Two men, both weighing 300 lbs, get in water. One is very muscular, the other is just fat. Which will float? Explain why. The fat man will float. Muscle is very dense and heavy but fat floats in water.
