  2. 4 Connective Tissue Vocabulary • ground substance – fluid component of connective tissue • matrix – extracellular fibers and ground substance • connective tissue proper – adipose and tendons • supporting connective tissue – cartilage and bone • fibroblasts – only cells that are always present in connective tissue proper • macrophages – large ameboid cells; defense • adipocytes – fat cells • mesenchymal cells – stem cells • melanin – pigment  • mast cells – mobile cells filled with histamine and heparin

  3. 4 Connective Tissue Vocabulary • collagen fibers – flexible, rope-like fibers making up tendons • reticular fibers – thinner than collagen; network-like • areolar – open-framework; little space • adipose – white and brown types • aponeurosis – tendinous sheet • fluid connective tissue – blood and lymph • osseous tissue – bone • interstitial growth – process to enlarge cartilage from within • appositional growth – process of new layers added to surface • hyaline – most common type of cartilage
