  1. Mormonism and the New Creationism David H Bailey

  2. What is Creation Science?

  3. Tenets of Creation Science. • A sudden creation of the universe. • Insufficiency of mutation and natural selection in bringing about development of all living kinds from a single organism. • Changes only within fixed limits of plants and animals • Explanation of the earth’s geology by catastrophism, including the occurrence of a worldwide flood • A recent inception of the earth and living kinds. William J. Overton, “Mclean vs. Arkansas Board of Education”

  4. This paper addresses the following • Historical Background to creationism. • Creationism’s connections to the LDS Church. • The scientific validity of creationism. • LDS theology and Creationism.

  5. Historical Background

  6. Questions • What 19th century religion is the predecessor of today’s modern day creationist movement? • Who is their founder and what impact did she have on the beginnings of this movement? • Who wrote The New Geology? • What did it say and why is it important.

  7. The LDS Connection

  8. Were did the saying “No Adam, no fall; no fall, no atonement; no atonement, no savior” originate with? • Who promoted this saying in the Quorum of the Twelve apostles along with Price’s book, The New Geology? How was it accepted?

  9. Survey of student at BYU • Have humans been created by evolutionary process? • 1935 Yes 64% No 36% • 1973 Yes 19 % No 81%

  10. 0 The New Creationism (IDC) • How are the Intelligent design creationists (IDC) distinguished from young earth creationists (YEC)? • Who is Philip Johnson? • Who is Michael Behe? • What is theistic evolution?

  11. The Scientific Evidence

  12. Tenets of Science • Is guided by natural law • Is explanatory by reference to natural laws • Is testable against the empirical world • Reaches conclusions that are tentative • Is falsifiable

  13. 0 The conventional scientific picture • Earth is approximately 4.5 billion ears old. • Phylogenic tree shows life forms descending through time with modification. Bacteria flowering plants vertebrates homo sapiens Geological dates are particularly well established confirmed by numerous independent methods

  14. Evolution Theory • What three areas of evolution are scientist still uncertain about and under intense investigation? • Answer: • The origin of the first reproducing molecules • The specific phylogenic course taken by many different species. • The relative roles of natural selection, genetic drift, mutations etc…

  15. 0 How scholarly are IDC and YEC scholars? • What key IDC articles have been published in peer reviewed journals? • What scholarly issues have been raised by IDC and YEC researchers? • Space dust • Paluxy River tracks • The second law of thermodynamics • Gaps in the fossil record • Out of order fossil layers • No observed speciation • Irreducible complexity • Probability • A naturalistic assumption

  17. Tenets of Science • Is guided by natural law • Is explanatory by reference to natural laws • Is testable against the empirical world • Reaches conclusions that are tentative • Is falsifiable

  18. Even the most devout and sincere believers in the Bible realize that it is, like most any other book, filled with metaphor, simile, allegory, and parable, which no intelligent person could be compelled to accept in a literal sense…. The Lord has not taken from those who believe in his word the power of reason. He expects every man who takes his yoke upon him to have common sense enough to accept a figure of speech in its proper setting and to understand that the holy scriptures are replete with allegorical stories, faith-building parables, and artistic speech… Joseph Fielding Smith

  19. As for the Bible account of the creation we may say that the Lord gave it to Moses, or rather Moses obtained the history and traditions of the fathers and from these picked out what he considered necessary, and that account has been handed down from age to age, and we have got it, no matter whether it is correct or not, and whether the Lord found the earth empty or void, whether he made it out of nothing or out of the rude elements; or whether he made it is six days or in as many millions of years is and will remain a matter of speculation in the minds of men unless he give revelation on the subject. • Brigham Young

  20. The opening chapters of Genesis, and scriptures related thereto, were never intended as a textbook of geology, archaeology, earth-science, or man-science. Holy scripture will endure, while the conceptions of men change with new discoveries. We do not show reverence for the scriptures when we misapply them through faulty interpretation. • James E. Talmage

  21. To limit and insist upon the whole of life and death to this side of Adam’s advent to the earth, some six or eight thousand years ago, as proposed by some, is to fly in the face of the facts so indisputably brought to light by the researcher of science in modern times… To pay attention to and give reasonable credence to their research and findings is to link the church of God with the highest increase of human thought and effort. On that side lies development, on the other lies contraction. It is on the former side that research work is going on and will continue to go on. Future investigation and discoveries will continue on that side, nothing will retard them, and nothing will develop on the other side. One leads to narrow sectarianism, the other keeps the open spirit of a world movement with which our New Dispensation began. As between them which is to be our choice? Brigham H. Roberts
