Strengthening the Role of Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses for Enhanced Patient Care

This project aims to support and empower Ward Sisters and Charge Nurses by ensuring they can deliver safe, effective, and person-centered care. Through a new job description framework, induction programs, and continuous professional development, the initiative seeks to improve team performance and enhance the patient experience. It also includes a comprehensive communication strategy and the establishment of a dedicated section on the NIPEC website. The project will culminate in a final report submitted to nursing leadership, facilitating better resource management and succession planning.

Leading Care Project - Aim Support and strengthen the role of Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses so that the post holders are enabled to: • Ensure the delivery of safe and effective care • Promote the development of a person-centred culture • Improve and enhance the patient and client experience • Manage and develop the performance of their team • Participate in the delivery of the organisation’s objectives through the effective management of resources • Challenge appropriately and confidently where standards of care fall below those which the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse would expect.

Project Objectives • Develop a generic job description and role framework • Agree a regional title for the role. • Identify the key elements required for the induction and continuous professional development of Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses • Make recommendations about processes that regionally and within organisations support succession planning for nurses and midwives. • Develop a section on NIPEC website for Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses. • Submit a final project report to Directors of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer.
