Don’t waste a submission • Make sure the paper … • Is within scope for the journal • Has an ‘angle’ that is likely to appeal • Is well connected to existing literature • Is presented in a way that is highly consistent with journal style • not just about formats • also broader issues, like use of maths • Is not too long • Is well written • Is polished

  23. 8. Do synthesis papers as well as straight research papers Pulls together various bits of research (perhaps your own) to draw bigger conclusions

  29. 1. Cite yourself Hilmer, C.E., Lusk, J.L. (2009). Determinants of citations to the agricultural and applied economics association journals, Review of Agricultural Economics 31: 677-694. Abstract This paper investigates citations to articles published in the Review of Agricultural Economics and in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics to better understand the impact of articles published in these journals and to evaluate recent policy decisions made by the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association. The biggest factors affecting non-self citations are self-citations and whether the article received at least one citation in the year after publication, suggesting that "advertising" and "signaling" play important roles in the extent to which a paper is cited. Principal papers and comments/replies are associated with significantly fewer citations for both journals.
