This project focuses on evaluating models that illustrate the origin of genetic variation in a population, specifically in snails. We will explore sources of genetic variation such as random mutation, sexual reproduction, crossing-over in meiosis, and gene flow. Each group will create a context-specific model to represent the origin of variation for one trait observed in snails. Important aspects to consider include which structures to include in the model and its overall function. The models will be submitted as collaborative group work.

Objectives • Evaluate models that illustrate the origin of variation in a population.
Last time: What are the sources of genetic variation? What are the sources of new alleles and new combinations of alleles in a population of snails? Random mutation; Sexual reproduction; Crossing-over in meiosis; Gene flow.
Last time: Modeling the origin of variation In your groups: Model the origin of variation for one of the traits you observed in the snails. Make your model context-specific. • What structures should you include? • What is the function of this model? Turn in your work (one model per group)
