Influences • Jazz Age – music – Dancing - Charleston - Women passive to active in society - Independent financially & literally • Development of mass media – Vogue, The Queen, Harper’s Bazaar • Youth at a premium – war • Glamour an important fashion trend – Broadway Shows • 1922 – King Tut’s Tomb – Egyptian influences in fashion

Designers • Coco Chanel - most popular designer in world - Neutral tones – beige, sand, navy, cream - simple shapes – didn’t require corsets of waist definition - Clothes made for comfort & ease of wear - Little Black Dress - 1924 - Chanel Suit – 1925 – “Boxy” cut – short jacket - tweed - Chanel N˚5 – 1924 - Costume Jewelry – trendy during this time period - Quilted Handbag

Silhouette • Slender, flat chested, tanned bodies • Rectangular • Early 20’s – waistline at waist – loose • Suits – long hemline – somewhat full • 1923 – waistline dropped – between waist & hip • 1924 – waistline at hip • 1925 – shift – no waistline emerged – may have collars – pleats – 1 inch below knee • Coats - wrapovers

Flapper • 1926 – 1928 – Fashion Imitates Life • Dresses for dancing • Revealed knees • Became fashionable = easy to reproduce for all levels of society • Makeup in public • Short bobbed hair style • Smoked cigarettes from long holders • Rolled stockings to below knee • Arm bands during the day • Visit Speakeasies

  8. Shoes & Hats • Cloche Hats – - close fitting - pulled down over eyes • T-Bar Shoes – buckles & bows & straps • Mary Jane Ankle strap button shoe

  9. Men’s Styles • Early 20’s • Short suit jackets (long = formal) • High waisted jackets worn with belts – Military roots • Trousers were relatively narrow and straight (never tapered) and they were worn rather short so that a man's socks often showed. Some cuffed

Mid 20’s • 1925 – wide trousers – “Oxford Bags” • Suit jackets normal waist – lapels wider – loose fitting sleeves • Late 1920s - double breasted vests, often worn with a single breasted jacket, also became quite fashionable. • Sport clothes – sweaters & short trousers – Knickers • Short tuxedo used frequently • Two-toned white and tan or white and black shoes

  11. Children Fashions • Rompers and short dresses replaced filly lace dresses for babies and toddlers (boys & girls) • Older girls – cotton frocks, cardigan sweaters and canvas shoes and sandals
