  1. States of Matter Mr. Monroe

  2. Chapter 16, Section One ~ States of matter Page 488 to / through 492 Objectives 1. Understand and explain Kinetic Theory 2. Understand the four states of matter i. Gas ii. Liquid iii. Solid iv. Plasma 3. Understand and explain the heating curve of matter

  3. KINETIC THEORY i. All matter is made of particles ii. The particles are always in constant motion iii. These particles are constantly colliding with each other, and the walls of the enclosing container.

  4. FOUR STATES OF MATTER Solid i. Single geometric arrangement, a crystal ii. Will not change shape iii. Will not fill container

  5. FOUR STATES OF MATTER Liquid i. No geometric arrangement ii. Will take shape of any container iii. Will not fill container

  6. FOUR STATES OF MATTER Gas i. No geometric arraignment ii. Will take the shape of any container iii. Will fill any container

  7. FOUR STATES OF MATTER Plasma i. No geometric arraignment ii. Will take the shape of any container iii. Will fill any container iv. Has separated positive and negative charges v. Most common state of matter in universe vi. Associated with high energy levels

  8. Heating Curve i. Heat of fusion a. Amount of energy needed to turn a solid to a liquid ii. Heat of vaporization b. Amount of energy needed to turn a liquid to a gas. iii. Heat of ionizaton c. Amount of energy needed to turn a gas to plasma.

  9. Why would an orange farmer intentionally put water on oranges, on a night when the temperature is supposed to dip below freezing? Is the farmer just NUTS?
