  4. Exercise A Rewrite the following sentences by using one of the above patterns. Follow the examples. 1.Her shock was such that she dropped her bag. →Such was her shock that she dropped her bag.

  5. 2.Mother Teresa’s unselfish love for the poor is such that we admire her a lot. →Such is Mother Teresa’s unselfish love for the poor that we admire her a lot.

  6. 3.The extent of the disaster was such that the local authorities were quite unable to handle it. →Such was the extent of the disaster that the local authorities were quite unableto handle it.

  7. 4.The performance was so great that the audience cheered. →So great was the performance that the audience cheered. 5.The room was so tiny that they couldn’t get a piano into it. →So tiny was the room that they couldn’t get a piano into it.

  8. 6.The typhoon was so violent that many trees were pulled up by the roots. →So violent was the typhoon that many trees were pulled up by the roots.

  9. Exercise B Look at the pictures below first. Then, match the phrases in the left box with the sentences in the right and rewrite them according to the patterns above. The first one has been done for you.

  20. Exercise B Complete the following passage with the given sentences and the above pattern. The first one has been done for you. * They were nothing but passing wind. * He had been protected by a divine shield. * It was the most precious thing in the world. * He was going to give a performance in the opera house. * He was one of the people who lost his beloved in the shelling.

  21. It was May 27th, 1992 in Sarajevo. A group of people was standing in a breadline, waiting for their share of a food supply. They looked at the bread attentively 1as though it was/were the most precious thing in the world. Suddenly, a mortar shell fell from the sky. Twenty-two innocent people, including children, were killed.
