  2. Goals and Objectives • Upon completion students should be able to: 1. Describe the various conflicts in Europe during the reign of Louis XIV. 2. Analyze the ideas of important French thinkers. 3. Explain Louis XIV’s policies and characterize his reign. 4. Describe the disastrous wars fought by France.

  3. Religious and Power Struggles • Henry of Navarre – ascends to French throne in 1589 and adopts Catholicism • Issues Edict of Nantes – a declaration of religious toleration

  4. Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu • Cardinal Richelieu – Louis XIII’s minister who rules France • Increases power of the Bourbons by limiting Huguenot’s freedom • Weakens power of the nobility

  5. Writers become skeptics • Skepticism – the idea that nothing can be known for certain • Montaigne – explores ideas about life’s meanings in essays

  6. Decartes: “I think therefor I am” • Descartes – uses observation and reason to create new philosophy

  7. Louis XIV • Louis XIV – most powerful ruler in French history • Louis takes control in 1661 • Appoints intendants – government agents – to collect taxes

  8. The ministers of Louis XIV • Economic Growth – Jean Baptiste Colbert, finance minister, helps economy grow • 1685 – Louis cancels the Edict of Nantes, Huguenots flee France

  9. The Sun King • Louis lives very well, every meal a feast • Louis keeps nobles at palace to increase his power over them

  11. Arts under Louis • Versailles is a center of arts during reign of Louis XIV • His purpose is to glorify his own existence

  12. Disastrous Wars • 1660’s to 1670’s – Louis tries to expand France • 1680’s – League of Augsburg – anti France alliance unites against him and France

  13. Louis XIV, the good and the bad • France is weakened by poor harvests, warfare, and high taxes

  14. War of Spanish Succession • 1701 – War to stop the union of the French and Spanish thrones • 1714 – war ends and France and Spain both lose territory

  15. Legacy of Louis XIV • Louis dies and leaves a mixed legacy • His time of power leave France a major military and cultural power in Europe

  16. France in economic hard times • His wars and elegant living leaves France in heavy debt • Would inspire many to question French monarchy.
