  3. Ranches • Most Ranches had 1 or 2 barns. • The hired hands on a ranch had to live in bunk houses which were usually really dirty. • Hired hands on a ranch were often mistreated and underpaid. • Cattle wandered on open land on most ranches. • Most work was done by horses, like pulling a plow.

  4. The 1930’s The Dust Bowl was a big deal in the 1930’s. Wind storms would pick up large amounts of dust and carry it for long distances. The Great Depression was also going on and was a very hard time for many people because there were lots of people without jobs. Dust Bowl Great Depression

The History of Salinas, CA • Salinas grew a lot in the 1930’s. • The buildings changed how they looked during the 1930’s. • Salinas didn’t do very well economically during the 1930’s. • The first settlers in Salinas were Native Americans. • The motto for Salinas is “Valley of the world” made by John Steinbeck. This is what a part of Salinas, CA looked like.

  6. The Great Depression The Great Depression was a very hard time for many people because they could not find jobs. The unemployment rate was between 25% to 30%. If you lived back then you would know how it felt.

The care of horses • A horse must always have exercise. • They must always have clean water. • You have to feed the horse. • A horse needs company so you need to go and see your horse every once in a while. • A horses pen needs to be cleaned. • When a colt is born you need to be right next to it or it will probably die.
