  3. History of Salinas • Salinas is where John Steinbeck was born. • John Steinbeck wrote some of his novels based on Salinas California. • The word Salinas means salt marsh. • Mexico owned Salinas a long time ago.

  4. Ranching • The person who owns a ranch is called a rancher. The words cattleman, stockgrower, and stockman are used sometimes too. The people who work for the owner are called cowhand, ranch hand, and cowboy.

  5. The 1930’s • In the middle west the Dust Bowl was still going on and ranchers from there would go that way so that they could farm and there crops and animals wouldn’t die.

  6. The Care of Horses • Horses in the early 1900’s were very important to people. If you got one when you were a still young you would be famous in your school (like Jody).

  7. Stetson hats • The hat was invented when John B. Stetson was on a camping trip. He was showing people that he could make a cloth out of fur without tanning. When John was feeling good again he went to Philadelphia and made a hat based on his experiences in the middle west.
