  2. E-mail Outages • Series of partial outages last week of October, various causes • Runaway IMAP sessions • Disk contention due to backups • Opal server memory shortage due to 90 Church power failure • One case of configuration error (emerald) • Interactive server (garnet): Intermittent IMAP/POP service on 10/15, 11/5, and 11/6 due to hung up IMAP sessions • Worst-case uptime (emerald): 99.85%

  3. Clustering • New e-mail server cluster being deployed (red.tc.umn.edu) • Will span data centers for maximum fault tolerance • Initially using round-robin DNS for load-balancing IMAP/POP/SMTP traffic

  4. Server-side Filtering • List of rules applied to incoming email • If (criteria) then (file in folder or forward) • Criteria based on To, From, size, etc. • Manage via myaccount page • NOT available for interactive accounts • Demo

  5. Server-side Anti-virus • Testing ClamAV in addition to current AV software (McAfee/NAI) • Statistics from testing will determine whether to use one, the other, or both • Motive: potential cost savings

  6. Bits ‘n’ Bytes • Shared folders in beta • About 35 participants so far • http://www.umn.edu/dirtools/share • Bug: folders not under ~/mail must be converted manually; fix forthcoming • M Key (Two-factor authentication) • Most production OIT/CCO servers cut over • Oracle database cutovers in progress • 512 people have active M Keys
