Important updates on password changes and Morris upgrades, including longer internet passwords, new password change mechanism, Morris MTA upgrades, departmental MTA registration, phase-out of clear-text passwords, email forwarding statistics, email and authentication outages, and directory services upgrade.

  2. Password Changes • Longer Internet passwords available Jan 11 • Maximum length extended to 125 • A few clients limit to as few as 32 • Minimum remains 6 (for now) • Passwords now checked with cracklib when changed

  3. Password Changes • Helpline and PLAs will have a new password change mechanism • Server assigns new 6-8 character random password to user • User must change password within 24 hours (or it stops working) • Slated for late Jan/early Feb after PLAs notified

  4. Morris Changes • Morris MTAs upgraded • All virus scanning now performed on inbound (MX) servers only • Twin Cities: mtain-*.tc.umn.edu • Morris: mta-*.mrs.umn.edu • Morris changes from mrs.umn.edu to morris.umn.edu on Feb 1

  5. Departmental MTA Registration • MTAs using the relay.tc.umn.edu service must register • Send IP address and contact information to isgroup@umn.edu • Includes the relay-by-IP service (currently 160.94.160.49) • Unregistered MTAs will be denied access starting July 5

  6. Phase-out of clear-text passwords • Mailings went out to all non-SSL POP users (about 10,000 users) • Future mailings will be separated into Morris and Twin Cities variants • FTP mailing going out Jan 20 • Next general mailing in early Feb

  7. Email Forwarding • 169,238 users have central e-mail; of those… • 26,994 (16%) are forwarding • 17,778 (10%) forward outside the U • 8,223 (5%) forward to free email providers (Hotmail, Yahoo, or Gmail)

  8. E-mail Outages • Performance issues on one email server (ruby) on January 6 • Awaiting SAN connectivity for two remaining email servers

  9. Authentication Outage • Radius authentication outage Jan 11 between 1822 and 2145 • Affected modem pool, Wirewall, and VPN only • x500.umn.edu is the only supported means of accessing Radius services

  10. Directory Services • X.500 directory software upgraded on all servers effective Jan 5 • Now running Global Directory Server 2003 (was GDS 2001)
