Email System Updates and Maintenance Overview – November 2009

In November 2009, the email system experienced several upgrades and maintenance activities, including the installation of new T5240 servers to replace older T2000 units, enhancing CPU capacity and RAM. Key email systems (Amethyst, Sapphire) faced degraded service due to antivirus scanning and maintenance tasks. Notable outages were recorded due to power outages and planned server replacements.   3. E-mail Server Upgrades • 5 New T5240s are now installed • Replacing T2000s with T5240s • Greater CPU capacity, double the RAM • Expedited setup procedure • 1 New T5240 spare • Server it replaces cannot use the expedited setup procedure

  5. Load Balancer Maintenance • 11/1 Gopermail, Google Apps outage • 5:24 a.m. - 6:24 a.m.

  6. WBOB Power Outage • Generator Replacement 10/24 - 10/25 affecting these email systems: • Amethyst • Peridot • Emerald • Garnet • LISTSERV • Critical accounts moved before 10/24

  7. SAN Maintenance • 11/8 affected these email systems: • Amethyst 9:00am-9:15am * • Sapphire 6:30am-6:50am • Diamond 9:09am-9:32am * • Ruby 9:23am-9:37am * * = partial outage from 6:30 to listed times

  8. Degraded service • Mail delays due to antivirus scanning • only one server of 9 unless noted • 10/12 up to20min • 10/19 up to18min • 10/20 up to 26min • 10/22up to 15min • 10/23up to 28min • 10/29up to 20min, 25min • White listing more sites e.g. bookstore

  9. MTA Upgrades • Upgrading inbound and outbound MTAs to prevent delays

  10. Gophermail 1 reminder • Gophermail 2 to replace GM1 • GM2 to listen on port 443 and 4443 • GM1 will be removed from mail.umn.edu page prior to the change • Targeting the end of fall semester

  11. Policy Change Reminder • Emptying Trash over 30 days old • Targeting 2nd week of Spring Semester • May include expunging items in trash that have been flagged for deletion

  12. Load Balancer Maintenance • 11/15 Gopermail, Google Apps outage • 5 a.m. - 9 a.m.
