  3. OR-OSHA Standard 1910.1200 Employers are responsible for informing employees of chemical hazards encountered in the work place, how to protect themselves from those hazards and what to do in case of an emergency.

  7. Chemical Hazards - Health Acute or Chronic Chronic – extended exposure, develops over time (cancer) Acute – short, intense exposure with immediate symptoms (sunburn)

  17. Container Labeling - Pipes • Pipes with chemicals in them must be labeled in a conspicuous place. • If pipes aren’t labeled, process sheets, written SOP, system schematics warning must be made available. • Pipes and building materials with asbestos must be labeled.

Material Safety Data Sheet • Product Manufacturer & contact information • Composition of chemical • Chemical mixture (both if tested as a whole or as individual chemicals) • Physical and chemical characteristics • Vapor pressure • Flash point • Physical hazard • Fire potential • Explosion • Reactivity

Material Safety Data Sheet • Health hazards • Eye, skin, inhalation & ingestion exposure; route of exposure: symptoms; first aid directions • Exposure Levels (OSHA PEL, ACGIH TLV) • Whether contains potential carcinogens • Safe handling • PPE, spill and leak procedures • Control measures • Engineering controls, work practices, PPE • Date of preparation / last update

  20. Material Safety Data Sheet • Manufacturer can provide the organization with the MSDS. • Must have one on-site for each chemical. • Update them annually in case of new composition, new chemicals, etc.

  21. Material Safety Data Sheet examples • Who do you contact for more information? • What PPE should be worn when handling the chemical? • What health/physical hazards exist? • Any special handling or storage instructions?

  22. Material Safety Data Sheet Annual Review… • Change the last reviewed date on binder/policy • Remove MSDS of chemicals no longer needed • Review inventory of required MSDSs

  23. Material Safety Data Sheet Site Specific Information • Where is your MSDS binder located? • Who updates new chemical MSDSs?

  25. Protecting Yourself - PPE • Gloves (latex, leather, kevlar, etc.) • Respirators (half face, self-contained breathing apparatus) • Foot protection (steel toed, closed toe) • Eye (safety glasses, goggles)

  26. Most Important Thing… Be aware and cognizant of chemical hazards! Pay attention to labeling!
