CA Standards • 10.8.1 – Compare the German, Italian, and Japanese drives for empire in the 1930s, including the 1937 Rape of Nanking, other atrocities in China, and the Stalin-Hitler Pact of 1939. • 10.8.2 – Understand the role of appeasement, nonintervention (isolationism), and the domestic distractions in Europe and the United States prior to the outbreak of World War II.

  20. GT31 Expansion of Nazi Germany, 1933–1939 BACKGROUND Upon climbing to power in 1933, Adolf Hitler played upon the fears of the western European democracies in order to expand Nazi Germany. In 1934, Hitler signed a nonaggression pact with Poland. In January 1935, the League of Nations held a plebiscite in the Saar region. Its people, under Nazi influence, voted to become part of Germany. In March 1936, Hitler defied the Versailles Treaty by sending troops into the Rhineland region. In March 1938, German troops moved into Austria and united it with Germany. Next, Hitler began the takeover of Czechoslovakia, which was the only democracy in central Europe and had a strong alliance with France. In the summer of 1938, he took the Sudetenland region, the mostly German-speaking fringe around the western half of Czechoslovakia. Hitler then proclaimed that Germany must have the rest of the country. In September of 1938, the Munich Conference convened to determine the fate of Czechoslovakia. Representatives of England, France, Italy, and Germany attended, but Czechoslovakia was not invited. The Munich agreement sentenced the remainder of Czechoslovakia to join the German Reich. Britain and France had hoped that this would be all that Hitler wanted, but he seized the Memel region in March 1939. He then started grumbling about German claims to Danzig and the Polish Corridor. In September 1939, Hitler’s armies crushed Poland. Britain and France then declared war, and World War II had begun.
