  1. States of Matter States of Matter Brain Pop Movie

  2. Molecules in a solid are close together; they vibrate, but do not change position. Solid Have a definite shape and volume

  3. Liquid Molecules in a liquid slide past one another, but do not spread apart. Have no definite shape but have a definite volume

  4. Molecules in a gas move freely and more quickly, separated from one another. Gas Have no definite shape nor volume

  5. very high KE - particles collide with enough energy to break into charged particles (+/-), • gas-like, no definiteshape or volume • Ex. stars, fluorescentlight bulbs, and CRTs Plasma

  6. Matter Changing State Brain Pop Movie • Which has the MOST energy? Why? • Which has the LEAST energy? Why? Because the molecules are moving the slowest! Least kinetic energy Because the molecules are moving the fastest! Most kinetic energy

  7. Phase Changes Increasing ENERGY

  8. Phase Change Graph

  9. Phase Change • During a phase change, temperature does not increase. If energy continues to be put in but the temperature doesn’t go up, then what is the energy doing? • The energy is being used to change the matter from one state to another.

  10. Matter Song

  11. Phase Dance • Get into a group with the students in your row. • Pretend that you are molecules—come up with a way to demonstrate, using your bodies as props, the three states of matter.
