  1. Plant and Animal Cells Grade 4 Unit 3 Lesson 1

  2. Topics Covered… • cell definition • parts of plant and animal cells • comparison of plant and animal cells • different types of animal cells

  3. What is a cell? definition: a small compartment that holds all of the biological equipment necessary to keep an organism alive

  4. About cells… Their main purpose is to organize. They make up all living things. Cells are alive!

  5. Animal CellWhat is it? • a form of eukaryotic cell • makes up many tissues in animals • many types (cheek, nerve, muscle, skin)

  6. Plant CellWhat is it? • a structural and functional unit of a plant • different plant cells have different roles • many types (parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma)

  7. Animal CellWhat are the parts? nucleus Golgi apparatus vacuole cellmembrane mitochondrion ribosomes cytoplasm flagella rough endoplasmic reticulum smooth endoplasmic reticulum

  8. Plant CellWhat are the parts? chloroplast vacuole cell wall cytoplasm smoothendoplasmicreticulum ribosomes rough endoplasmicreticulum mitochondrion Golgi apparatus nucleus

  9. Animal Cell vs. Plant CellWhat’s the difference? small or no vacuole chloroplasts large vacuole flagella rectangluar shape cell wall

  10. Compare and Contrast Both Plant Animal mitochondrion cell wall no cell wall Golgi apparatus large vacuole small or no vacuole rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum no chloroplasts chloroplasts nucleus flagella only in gametes flagella cytoplasm ribosomes

  11. Animal Cells • Nerve cells electrochemicallysend information between sensory receptors and the central nervous system. Each type of animal cell is specialized to do different jobs. dendrites axon

  12. Animal Cells • Blood cells carry oxygen to the body’s tissues and collect carbon dioxide. They also carry hormones, enzymes, and vitamins to different parts of the body. Each type of animal cell is specialized to do different jobs. white blood cell red blood cell

  13. Animal Cells • Muscle cells comprise the three different types of muscles: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth types. These cells are shaped differently and enable these muscles to help our bodies function properly. Each type of animal cell is specialized to do different jobs.

  14. Animal Cells • Skin cells make up the tissue that covers our bodies. These cells are good at providing a barrier to the external environment and at preventing water loss. Each type of animal cell is specialized to do different jobs.

  15. Animal Cells Each type of animal cell is specialized to do different jobs. lung cells brain cells bone cells There are many other types of animal cells!
