  1. Brain Warm-Up • Solve the expressions below using d = 3.8, e = 13.03 and f = 9. 1.) d + e 2.) f - d 3.) e - f 4.) e + f

  2. Multiplying Decimals November 2, 2011 Ms. Latimer

  3. Objective : to accurately multiply decimals To multiply decimals, place the longer number on top and multiply as usual. Then count up the number of decimal places in both of the factors. Place the decimal in your answer so that it has the same number of decimal places. 4.291 x 3.5 = 15.0185 3 places 1 place 4 places

  4. Examples: Let’s work on placing the decimal point correctly… 1.) 78.26 x 12 = 93912 2.) 3.9612 x 2.3 = 911076 3.) 5.91 x 9.4 = 55554 4.) 10.631 x 5 = 53155 5.) 8.93013 x 0.82341 = 73531583433

  5. Skill Practice: Find the following products if a = 8.91, b = 3.05 and c = 7. 1.) ac 2.) 1.2 x b 3.) 0.123 • a 4.) 1.8201c You should estimate to see if your answers are reasonable and double check that you’ve counted up your decimal places correctly!

  6. Practice • Pg 19 # 1-9, 13-15

  7. Out! • Agendas: • PB pg 20 #17-23 • Exit Slip

  8. Application: Your back yard is 30.3 meters wide and 61.28 meters long. You decide to charge by the square meter for mowing the lawn. • Part A: What is the area? • Part B: Use what you know about decimal multiplication to explain how you found your answer? Use words and/or numbers in your explanation
