  1. MICE - Simulation/Optics Summary Chris Rogers, UKNFIC 17th Feb 05

  2. Simulation • Developing simulation • Version 1.0 released!! • Big step for the Simulation • Means we have full geometry etc in G4MICE • Some talks on Physics processes/modelling in G4MICE • Two MICE-Notes posted

  3. Overview - Yagmur Torun

  4. Physics Processes - Rikard Sandstrom- Summary • We can simulate anything we want at MeV scale. • Geant4 has matured into a reliable tool. • We will move to G4.7 soon. • Many changes to stepping and physics requires testing of G4MICE physics. • With the correct background the user of G4MICE can/will be able to set up environment to fulfill her exact requirements. • G4MICE has physics defaults which makes sense. • Will need optimization. • Depending on what you do with G4MICE the idea of ideal defaults differ. (E.g. should muon decay be on by default?)

  5. Cooling & Tracking - Chris Rogers • Comparison of Simulation performance in G4MICE and ICOOL • ICOOL is a well regarded piece of code developed by the (US?) Neutrino Factory and Muon Collider Collaboration

  6. Summary - Default values • B-Field • Br ~ 1%; Bz ~ 0.4% • Grid Spacing • X ~ 1%; Px ~ 0.01% • Step Size • X ~ 2%; Px ~ 1% • Single Particle through absorber • ds(E) ~ 1%, ds(t) ~ 25%; ds(px) ~ 10% • (But time spread is negligible factor anyway) • Bunch through absorber • d De ~ 0.5% transverse, 0.3% longitudinal

  7. Optics & Beamline • Optics - optical solution has been found for all MICE stages I - VI (i.e. currents set) • Optics WIP MICE stage “V.0”, “III+”, MRI solenoid • Some discussion of using cheaper “MRI” solenoids for the tracker • Medical solenoids 3T field instead of 4T • Beamline well developed • Needs to be matched to MICE • Target still needs work • Some diagnostics proposed in the Isis beamline

  8. Optics Solutions - Ulisse Bravar • Need to make sure that the magnetic fields are suitably arranged to stop beam scraping, enhance cooling performance • Solve 2nd order DE • 128 solutions for different initial momenta, MICE stages • WIP - solutions for MICE stage “V.0”, “III+”, MRI solenoid • Ulisse has changed work emphasis - future unclear • Some personnel changes

  9. - STEP I: spring 2006 STEP II: summer 2006 STEP III: winter 2007 STEP IV: spring 2007 STEP V: fall 2007 STEP VI: 2008 MICE Stages 2006 …………… 2007 …………… 2008

  10. Solenoid Design and Cost update • Decision on 3T “MRI” vs 4T solenoid • Impact on tracker resolution • Not clear whether MRI magnets are cheaper • Still an open question • Also talk of two different 4T solenoids • INFN and LBNL • Can only build one LBNL solenoid but cheaper

  11. Beamline • Main issue is matching the Beamline into MICE • Beamline has low emittance ~ 1 mm pi rad • MICE requires emittance 1 - 15 mm pi rad • Put lead sheets between Beamline and MICE • Details need to be resolved
