  1. GeoRefUpdate - 2006 Sharon Tahirkheli snt@agiweb.org GSIS E-Resources Forum October 23, 2006

  2. GeoRef • 2006 Results • Will complete approximately 90,000 bibliographic references – bringing total in GeoRef to almost 2.8 million references • Coverage includes: • 40 different languages • Publications from 90 different countries • Serials, books, maps, theses, government reports, conference proceedings and abstracts

  3. GeoRef • So Far This Year – Through 22 updates • 41% of the new records contain abstracts • 25% of the new references contain URLs or DOIs • 92% of the references are to series (including monographic and conference series) • 44% of the references come from conferences • 2000 references are to theses and/or dissertations

  4. GeoRef • Where It Comes From: • USGS library system • AGI library • Distributed indexer network • Publisher data • International arrangements

  5. GeoRef • Serials Issues Study • Examined 2000, 2003, 2006 • Determined the total number of issues of series located for each year • Calculated the percentage obtained from each source • Findings • Total number of issues grew 3.3% (2000 to 2003) and 7.5% (2003 to 2006)

  6. GeoRef

  7. GeoRef • Serials Issues Study • The percentage of items obtained from the USGS dropped from 48% in 2000 to 38% in 2006 • Items obtained directly by AGI grew from 13% in 2000 to 24.5% in 2006 • The amount of metadata delivered electronically by publishers almost doubled, but remains relatively small at 7% • International Indexing Projects account for almost 30% of all issues obtained in 2006

  8. GeoRef • Initial Comments • Direct AGI acquisition of sources has counterbalanced some of the reduction in sources from the USGS library (Grew 11.5%) • AGI obtains 55% of its materials from the Web. What are the implications of this for specific segments of the literature that are going missing? Gray Literature? Conference Proceedings? • International Partnerships have grown to fill other coverage gaps • The International publications represented by these partnerships are increasingly unavailable in US libraries. Is GeoRef doing enough to insure future availability?
