Wednesday, October 5 • J#9 Compare and contrast what was happening in Mesopotamia and Egypt on the timeline. • Big issue is they were both conquered about the same time • Big issue was Egypt was united and Mesopotamia was divided into city-states • Both were growing about the same time with Mesopotamia developing writing before Egypt • J#10 How did Mesopotamia end? What is happening in Egypt as Mesopotamia is ending? • Both were taken over by enemies

Narmer – king of Upper Egypt who united Upper and Lower Egypt • 5. cataracts – steep rapids formed by cliffs and boulders in the river; waterfall • 6. delta – area of fertile soil at the mouth of a river; fan-shaped • 7. papyrus – reed plant of the Nile valley used to make paper • 8. hieroglyphics – system of writing made up of thousands of picture symbols made up by the ancient Egyptians • 9. dynasty - line of rulers from the same family

  16. Tuesday Cont. EQ: How was Egypt ruled differently than Mesopotamia? 6.1.4 • J#12 Around 3100 bc, 2 major kingdoms, Upper and Lower Egypt were combined into one. How did that happen and why was it important to Egypt? • Early in Egypt’s History, King Narmer (Menes) of Upper Egypt conquered Lower Egypt and pulled them together as a whole civilization. To symbolize his unifying the 2 kingdoms, he put the white crown of Upper Egypt and the red crown of Lower Egypt together and from that time on all pharaohs wore that crown • Find the social pyramid on page 45, draw the outline and label it • J#13 What does the social pyramid represent? Explain the social pyramid. Pharaoh had the most power, unskilled workers had none
