  6. Why is Oceanography Important • We can use the oceans to learn about our environment and how the earth works as a global system • New electronic devices are able to probe deep sea environments • Temperature • Salinity • Why is hard for humans to study the deep sea?

  7. What do Oceanographers Do? • Ship Research of Sea • Seismology and Geophysics • Studied sometimes with underwater observatories • Moorings from land with probes • AUV • Autonomous Undersea Vehicles • Propel themselves drift with current • ROV • Remotely operated vehicle

  8. With in sensitive areas such as estuaries “Cat-Scans” can be done

  9. Working in the Polar Regions • Icebreakers and drilling holes in the ice are two ways of studding the ice filled areas
