Discovery • 1522 - Spanish explorer Gil Gonzalez de Avila names Nicaragua after a local Indian chief, Nicarao. • 1523-24 - Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba completes conquest of Nicaragua.1821 - Nicaragua becomes independent, but is incorporated into the Mexican empire.1823 - Nicaragua becomes part of the United Provinces of Central America, which also comprises Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. • 1522 - El explorador español Gil González de Avila nombres de Nicaragua después de un jefe indígena local, Nicarao. • 1523-24 - Francisco Hernández de Córdobacompleta la conquista de Nicaragua. • 1821 -Nicaragua se convierte en independiente, pero se ha incorporado al imperio mexicano. • 1823 - Nicaraguase convierte en parte de las Provincias Unidas de América Central, que también comprende Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala y Honduras.

Somoza family dictatorship • 1937 - General Somoza elected president, heralding the start of a 44-year-long dictatorship by his family.1956 - General Somoza assassinated, but is succeeded as president by his son, Luis Somoza Debayle.1967 - Luis Somoza dies and is succeeded as president by his brother, Anastasio Somoza.1972 - Managua is devastated by an earthquake that kills between 5,000 and 10,000 people. • 1937 - General Somoza elegido presidente, anunciando el comienzo de una dictadura de 44 añosde duración por su familia.1956 - El general Somoza asesinado, pero sucedió como presidente por su hijo, Luis Somoza Debayle.1967 - Luis Somoza muere y es sucedido en la presidencia por su hermano, Anastasio Somoza.1972 - Managua es devastada por un terremoto quemata a entre 5.000 y 10.000 personas.

Sandinista revolution and US subversion • 1980 - Somoza assassinated in Paraguay; FSLN government led by Daniel Ortega nationalises and turns into cooperatives lands held by the Somoza family. • 1982 - US-sponsored attacks by Contra rebels based in Honduras begin; state of emergency declared.1984 - Daniel Ortega elected president; US mines Nicaraguan harbours and is condemned by the World Court for doing so.1987-88 - Nicaraguan leadership signs peace agreement and subsequently holds talks with Contra; hurricane leaves 180,000 people homeless. • 1980 - Somoza, asesinado en Paraguay, dirigido por elgobierno del FSLN Daniel Ortega nacionaliza y se convierte en tierras cooperativas en manos de la familia Somoza. • 1982 - los ataques de Estados Unidos y patrocinadopor rebeldes de la Contra en Honduras comienzan;estado de emergencia declarado. • 1984 - Daniel Ortega, presidente electo; minas EE.UU.puertos nicaragüenses y es condenado por la Corte Internacional de Justicia para hacerlo. • 1987-1988 - el liderazgo de Nicaragua firma acuerdo de paz y posteriormente se reúne con Contra, el huracán deja a 180.000 personas sin hogar.

Post-Sandinista era • 1990 -  Violeta Chamorro becomes president.1992 - Earthquake renders 16,000 people homeless.1996 - Arnoldo Aleman elected president.1998 - Hurricane Mitch causes massive devastation. Some 3,000 people are killed and hundreds of thousands are left homeless. • 2002 March - Opposition Sandinista party re-elects Daniel Ortega as its leader despite his three consecutive defeats since 1990.2002 August - Former president Arnoldo Aleman charged with money laundering, embezzlement during his term in office.2003 December - Arnoldo Aleman jailed for 20 years for corruption. A year later he is transferred to house arrest. • 1990 - Violeta Chamorro asume la presidencia.1992 - Terremoto de 16.000 personas sin hogar presta.1996 - Presidente Arnoldo Alemany elegidos.1998 - El huracán Mitch causa devastación masiva.Unas 3.000 personas mueren y cientos de miles sequedaron sin hogar.De marzo de 2002 - La oposición sandinista nuevo partido elige a Daniel Ortega como su líder a pesar desus tres derrotas consecutivas desde 1990.2002 Agosto - El ex presidente Arnoldo Alemán,acusado de blanqueo de capitales, malversación de fondos durante su mandato.2003 Diciembre - Arnoldo Alemán encarcelado durante 20 años por corrupción. Un año más tarde es trasladado a arresto domiciliario.

  7. Debt Recovery • 2004 January - World Bank wipes 80% of Nicaragua's debt to the institution. President Bolaños says it is the best news for the country in 25 years.2004 July - Agreement with Russia to write-off Nicaragua's multi-billion-dollar Soviet-era debt. • 2006 April - Free trade deal with the US comes into effect. Nicaragua's Congress approved the Central American Free Trade Agreement (Cafta) in October 2005.2006 October - President Bolaños unveils plans to build a new ship canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.MPs approve a tough new bill that bans abortions, including in cases where the mother's life is at risk.2006 November - Ex-president Daniel Ortega is returned to power in elections..2009 July - President Ortega announces plans to change the constitution to allow him to stand for another term in office. • 2004 Enero - El Banco Mundial toallitas 80% de la deuda de Nicaragua a la institución. PresidenteBolaños dice que es la mejor noticia para el país en 25años. • Julio de 2004 - Acuerdo con Rusia para la cancelaciónde Nicaragua miles de millones de dólares la deuda de la era soviética. • De abril de 2006 - tratado de libre comercio con los EE.UU. entre en vigor. Congreso de Nicaragua aprobóel Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) en octubre de 2005. • De octubre de 2006 - El presidente Bolaños anunciaplanes de construir un canal nuevo barco que une los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico.Los diputados aprobar un proyecto de ley que prohíbenuevos difíciles abortos, incluso en los casos donde la vida de la madre está en riesgo.De noviembre de 2006 - El ex presidente DanielOrtega volvió al poder en las elecciones. • 2009 Julio - El presidente Ortega anunció planes paracambiar la Constitución para poder presentarse a un nuevo mandato en el cargo.
